A Rare Problem Fistula Can Impact Your Daily Life

Let’s Understand Fistula

The fistula develops near the anus creating a tunnel connected to the anal canal. This fistula is a result of an infected internal gland that develops pus. It is painful but the draining of the pus reduces the pain and leaves some infection behind which can again develop into another fistula, if not cured.

Fistula doesn’t heal itself. That’s why it is necessary to seek medical care to prevent the recurrence of the infection.

The Underlying Causes Of Fistula

The human body structure has some internal glands. These glands often get clogged due to bacteria, faeces and other external matter that leads to infection. If the infection is serious, it causes pus which is very unpleasant.

Apart from clogging of the internal glands, fistula can also occur due to some medical conditions like Inflammatory diseases of the intestine, trauma, tuberculosis, a complicated anal surgery, hidradenitis suppurativa (a skin disease that causes pus), Diverticula (small pockets developed in the lining of the large intestine), Cancer and its treatment can also lead to an infection that causes fistula.

Know If You Have Fistula Or Not

If you have pain, redness or swelling around the anus. You feel uncomfortable sitting due to constant pain. A smelly discharge heads from the area near your anus. You have pus or blood while passing stools. You may feel ill, tired or develop chills and fever. You may find urination and bowel movements difficult.

If you experience any of the above symptoms often then you should get yourself checked for the fistula to detect any growing infection that can be cured at the initial level.

Fistula Is A Problem

Fistula is rare but a big problem because it doesn’t heal itself and if left untreated can increase the risk of developing cancer in the fistula tract.

When a person develops fistula then the external opening occurs and causes pain and irritation to the patient. This problem makes him embarrassed to discuss it in public. He feels uncomfortable in his routine life. Once the fistula drains, it provides relief to the patient but if any of the traces of the infection left in the tract can cause recurrence of the problem.

The recurrence of the problem means to suffer the whole scenario again which makes the life of a patient difficult. Any infection in the body needs to be cured for the better health of the rest of the body.
