What are doshas?

The word dosha originated from Sanskrit, which is an Ayurvedic term. If translated into English, it can mean 'one which can cause problems.

There are 3 types of Doshas which are Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. These three dosha's elements affect the physical and psychological health of the human being. Our health is the balance of the five elements (air, earth, space, water, and fire).

Each person has a unique and different proportion of doshas. For example, one may have more pitta dosha and the other may have more Vata dosha or Kapha dosha or vice versa other doshas also.

Importance of Doshas:

Knowing the dosha is very beneficial for health. Each element of the dosha has different benefits.

Dosha can be defined as the vital energy for the individual. You will develop a super and natural power by knowing your doshas. This will help you understand what to eat and what not to eat. It will increase your energy, strength, and health. e.t.c.

Following are the major benefits of knowing the doshas.

1. It will help you understand your diet plans

One of the major benefits of understanding doshas is that you will be able to understand what your body needs, and what kind of food you need to eat. Hence, understanding the dosha will give you optimum health.

2. It will help you understand your emotional and psychological behaviour.

You can identify emotional states like, are you hot-tempered or calm, positive attitude or negative attitude. For example, the fire element shows a hot head and anger. Air and space denote worry, tension and anxiety. Earth and Water reveal whether some people are likely to feel sad and lonely.

3. It will help you understand your workout or exercise program.

For example, Vata refers to a thin body structure (requiring light body-strengthening exercises). Pitta shows a lean but strong body (they easily enjoy exercise plans). Kapha dosha can make it difficult to start an exercise regimen. But once they start, they won't stop.
Concentrating on the cardiovascular with sweat will benefit Kapha dosha.

4. It will help you enhance your beauty.

Dosha balancing will help you understand how to take care of your entire body. You will understand what nutrition, and vitamins your body needs, it will also affect your skin. You will develop optimum skin health.

For example, Vata includes dry skin (it requires more hydration). Pitta dosha leads to redness or swells the skin (this requires attention to anti-inflammatory ingredients). Kaphas show toxins and pollution in the body. You can easily understand the skincare routine by knowing the doshas.

Let's understand each type of doshas:

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are based on Ayurveda. The human body is based on these three doshas.

1. Vata (air and space):

Vata is the main, and we can say that it is the most important dosha of human beings. The two elements in Vata are air and space. It is described as thin or light, cold, dry, and rough.

A person with Vata dosha is usually energetic, thin, slender, and more creative. Their behavior is based on the weather conditions, the people around them, and the foods they eat.

- Positive impacts:

  • Fast mover or fast learner,
  • Creative thinking,
  • Multitaskers,
  • Very kind,
  • Thin or slim.

- Negative impacts:

  • Easily mood swings,
  • anxious and depressed,
  • Sensitive to cold weather,
  • Stomach related problems,
  • Sleep problems.

2. Pitta (fire and water):

Pitta is a combination of fire and water. A person with this dosha is usually aggressive or hot-tempered. Hot days or summer season is known as Pitta season. They have muscular bodies with the nature of athletes. Aggressive Nature can be off-putting to other people with pitta dosha.

- Positive impacts:

  • Motivated and strong,
  • Goal-oriented, intelligent,
  • Healthy skin, and hair,
  • Fast learner,
  • Strong leadership skills.

- Negative impacts:

  • Anger or hot-tempered,
  • Mood swings when hungry,
  • Inflammation is their,
  • Sensitive to hot weather. e.t.c.

3. Kapha (earth and water).

Kapha consists of two elements: earth and water. People with Kapha dosha are humble and very stable. They may be happier. People with Kapha dosha do not get upset easily and think before taking action.

- Positive impacts:

  • Very caring and supportive
  • Trustworthy,
  • Maturity, peace, and comfort,
  • Happy,
  • strong bones,
  • Strong immune system.

- Negative impacts:

  • Weight gain easily,
  • Low and slow metabolism,
  • Slow in nature,
  • Asthma, allergies, heart, disease,
  • Depressed easily.

Benefits of Doshas to control health problems.

According to Ayurveda, the chances of getting sick or having health problems are related to the imbalance of your doshas in your body. We all have a mixture of three doshas(Vata, pitta, Kapha) Each dosha controls a different body function.

Let us see what kind of health difficulties occur with different doshas and how to control them.

Vata dosha:

Vata dosha is a very powerful dosha that controls very basic but important functions of the body. Such as body cells, mind, breathing, blood flow, heart functions, intestines and more.

The imbalance of Vata dosha leads to problems like stress, asthma, heart disease, skin issues, and joint problems.

Foods to add:

  • Something sweet, salty, and sour-based foods.
  • Sometimes warm, oily, and heavy food.
  • Do not take cold foods and raw foods
  • Herbs like coriander, seed, Saffron, turmeric, parsley, thyme

Foods to avoid:

  • Salads,
  • Vegetables,
  • Cold foods (iced based food),
  • Avoid caffeine,
  • Avoid Too many dried fruits.

Pitta dosha:

Pitta dosha controls your digestion, metabolism, and hormones that are directly linked to the appetite process. Infections, high blood pressure, Crohn's disease, and heart disease can be common problems with Pitta dosha imbalances.

Foods to add:

  • leafy green vegetables,
  • Basmati rice, wheat,
  • Chickpeas, mung, lentils,
  • Sweet and ripe Fruits,
  • Herbs such as Coriander, Turmeric, Cardamom, fennel, mint, saffron, cumin, black pepper,
  • milk, grains.

Foods to avoid:

  • Butter, added fat, cheese.
  • Pickles, sour based food,
  • Cream,
  • Vinegar,
  • Alcoholic,
  • Coffee, tea,
  • Oily, salty, heavy foods,
  • Egg, nuts, hot drinks.

Kapha dosha:

Weight gain, bloating, and allergies are there with Kapha dosha. Imbalance in Kapha may include sleeping excessively, asthma, diabetes, depression, and being overweight. Kapha controls the immune system, strengthens your body, hydrates skin tissue and cells, and enhances joints and bone health.

Foods to add:

  • Warm and light food,
  • You can eat spicy food in some quantity,
  • Herbs, such as cumin, fenugreek, ginger, sesame, and turmeric.
  • Rice and wheat.
  • milk, soy milk. e.t.c.

Foods to avoid:

  • fatty or Sweet foods and salt intake,
  • Deep-fried foods,
  • Avoid dairy products,
  • You can use ghee and oils but in small amounts.
  • Avoid cold foods and drinks. e.t.c

How to balance doshas

Vata.

Vata represents your mind, the potential for inner workings. Vata is described to be anxious and stressful and also causes stomach-related problems. The following will give you an answer to control Vata.

  • go to sleep before 10 pm,
  • Follow a disciplined routine,
  • Follow the disciplinary diet plan according to your dosha,
  • Do meditation, relaxation(Pranayama, oil massage), and yoga. e.t.c.

Pitta

Pitta controls metabolism, skin, and hair. Pitta is described as having an aggressive and angry nature. The following tips will help you control pitta dosha.

  • Avoid taking anything too seriously,
  • Follow disciplined life,
  • Avoid too much screen time, especially at night,
  • Control your emotions, calm yourself down, play some sports, and relax.
  • exercise, do yoga and walk in nature,
  • disciplinary diet plan which makes you cool. e.t.c.

Kapha.

Kapha described calmness, stillness, and gentleness in nature. But it also includes slow nature, easy weight gain, and stress. Follow the tips given below to control Kapha dosha.
